About the Animal Welfare Community of Practice

The Animal Welfare Community of Practice is a team of experts that includes state, regional, and county Extension educators and research and teaching professionals, who have: 1) expertise in the application and implementation of farm animal welfare science, 2) expertise in farm animal production, and/or 3) interest in current farm animal welfare issues and their impact on animal agriculture.

Our mission, our goals

The Animal Welfare Community of Practice strives to provide science-based and peer-reviewed information regarding animal welfare to livestock and poultry personnel and to consumers and the public. Our national effort also allows for expertise to develop new, educational materials and learning opportunities to address current issues and respond to future issues as they arise. Our community will make every effort to remain a reliable, long-standing resource that responds promptly to the questions and concerns of our community of interest.

Our community resources

Animals of the following species will Animals of the following species will be included in the resources provided by the community: cattle (dairy and beef), sheep, goats, horses, camelids (llamas and alpacas), poultry (chickens and turkeys), and swine. Additional content areas will include: ethics, housing, disease, transport, handling, slaughter, euthanasia, and pain and distress. As our community continues to develop resources, we encourage the submission of your questions to our experts.
